Old-School Snacks For Sarasota Kids

Less Meat, More Plants For Healthier Tampa Kids

What does it take to make a healthy snack? The aisles at every Tampa, Bradenton, and Osprey grocery store are lined with packages that claim to be healthy and to contain the newest, most exciting vitamin or mineral. But is that really what makes a snack healthy?

Chances are that the answer is no. A lot of the foods that make healthy snacks are not the ones that you find packaged in the middle of the supermarket. Rather, they are what we would consider plain old food.

Plain old food has the advantage of being unprocessed and free of chemicals and preservatives. So, let’s take a look at these seemingly boring snack ingredients.

Cheese is a real protein powerhouse for your kids, so a little goes a long way. For a fun twist, try using cookie cutters to make shapes that your kids will love to gobble up!

Peanut butter and childhood go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly. Ants on a log, peanut butter spread on celery with raisins is always a fun treat. If your child has peanut allergies, you can always substitute almond butter in most recipes.

Low-fat yogurt is probably a favorite of your child’s already, but this versatile source of calcium has plenty of tricks up its sleeves. Try adding berries, or something crunchy like granola or whole-grain cereal. And, in the hot summer months, a yogurt pop can really hit the spot.

The humble egg isn’t just for breakfast anymore. Hard-boiled eggs kept in the fridge might be one of the most convenient ways to enjoy this high-protein snack.

As you can see, the secret to children’s nutrition might just be that there is no secret at all. Find real food, make it into a snack, and ignore the claims made by processed, pre-packaged food.

Keep Bradenton Kids Moving With An At-Home Dance Party!

Tampa Kids Health

Healthy Sarasota area children don’t spend too much time sitting around. They keep busy with active play and North Port recreational sports. But sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate.

When it’s too hot, cold, or wet for your kids to go out, don’t just turn on the TV or share your iPad, get your kids moving with a dance party!

Many moms have discovered how fun it is to dance their way to health in exercise classes such as Zumba and Hip Hop. If you’ve attended these classes at your local Osprey or Tampa gym, try teaching your kids some of the simpler routines.

However, even if you prefer running to dancing, your kids will have fun. Just choose some music and start moving. You’ll be having fun and preventing childhood obesity at the same time.

Sarasota parents, don’t let the weather stop you from helping your kids find a way to move around and stay healthy!

My name is Rita Wright and I am very interested in kids health in Tampa. I am the owner of my own Sarasota area home business that sells High Protein Meal Replacement.

4 Things Your North Port Pediatrician Wants You To Know

Tampa Kids Vitamins

The health of their children is a top priority for parents in the Tampa, Bradenton, and Osprey areas, and that’s why having a good relationship with your child’s pediatrician is important. From well-child check-ups to children’s immunizations to flu shots, these healthcare providers are there when parents need them.

Today in the North Port Children’s Health Blog, we want to give you a look into some of the issues facing pediatricians, especially those issues that they may have difficulty discussing with parents.

1. A cold is a cold is a cold, even if they call it something different. There are lots of names for the common cold, like “viral rhinosinusitis” or “purulent rhinitis”. They might sound fancy, but if your kids has it, it really just means they have a cold. Many pediatricians use these terms so parents don’t feel like their being sent away from the office with an overly-simple diagnosis.

2. Old wives’ tales and internet health sites are no substitutes for professional medical advice! There are many rumors that have no scientific basis, but some patients insist on bringing their child in because an older member of the family noticed something (think green snot or ear tugging). Also, while the internet is filled with great information, it is also teeming with sensationalized and nonscientific sites that can be downright dangerous. Pediatricians just want parents to be safe and well-informed when choosing how to treat their child.

3. Fevers are scary, but for children over 3 months old, there is no magic number where a fever becomes dangerous. However, accompanying symptoms like lethargy, rash, or inconsolable crying are cause for concern.

4. Scheduling is not an exact science.
No one likes to camp out in the waiting room, but, once in a while, a patient requires a little extra care, and this can throw the schedule off for the day. However, one day that patient may be your child, and you’ll want that schedule-ruining extra care as well.

How Healthy Is Your Sarasota Community?

How Healthy Is Your Sarasota Community? Hello Sarasota residents! Welcome to my children’s health blog, Sarasota edition. I came across an interesting article in Children’s Health Magazine that got me thinking about children’s health factors in Sarasota.

Have you considered how your Florida community influences your child’s health? In a recent study, independent experts compiled statistics on more than 30 factors that are important to a child’s development including: crime and safety, education, economics, housing, education, cultural attractions, and health.1

Burlington, Vermont came out on top, receiving high marks in all areas of study. Burlington has the fewest fast food restaurants per capita and experts believe this is linked to the low rate of obesity. Clearly, the rate of obesity in Tampa and Bradenton is partially due to the ready availability of Big Macs and Whoppers.

While moving to Burlington isn’t necessary for your Sarasota child to thrive, ask yourself how your own Florida neighborhood ranks. If you think it could improve, attend Sarasota city meetings or make changes within your own home.

You could encourage more participation in sports, start a crime-preventing Sarasota neighborhood watch group, cook as a family, or seek out Tampa museums and North Port cultural events. Whatever you choose, your children will reap the health benefits of your efforts.

If you want to improve your Sarasota child’s nutrition, contact me today to learn about a nutritional supplement packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Chemical-free Cleaning For Healthier Florida Homes

Chemical-free Cleaning For Healthier Florida Homes

Hello Florida! Sarasota parents do such a great job at keeping their children safe and healthy. They help them with homework, take them to parks and museums, keep up on their well-child visits and immunizations, and feed them healthy well-rounded diets. Here is one more thing parents can do for their children’s health.

Because we live in such a chemical-filled world, any time parents can cut down on the amounts of chemicals used in the home, the better. Here are a few ways to do that using something you probably already have in your pantry: white vinegar.

  • Clean windows with a spray bottle filled with 2 cups of water, 1/2 cup of white vinegar, and a dab of liquid dish soap. Make sure you label the bottle and keep it out of the reach of children.
  • Clean your drains and pipes with 1 cup baking soda, and 1 cup hot white vinegar. Let it sit for a few minutes, and then rinse the drain with hot water. The baking soda and vinegar will foam up in the pipes, and clean away debris and germs.
  • Deodorize your home by boiling a mixture of water and white distilled vinegar in a pot. The vinegar odor will only last a few minutes, and will carry away odors with it.
  • Use distilled white vinegar to keep ants away from your home. Spray undiluted distilled white vinegar along the outside of your home wherever they like to come in.

There are many other natural home cleaning products: just search the internet! Good luck Tampa parents – you are wonderful, and so are your children!

“‘Good Job, Bobby! Have Some Saturated Fat!'”

'Good Job, Bobby! Have Some Saturated Fat!' Do your children’s Sarasota school teachers reward good behavior with candy or cookies? Don’t you think it’s a little strange to reward North Port children with something that is bad for them?

Using unhealthy food as a token of merit undermines Sarasota nutrition education and encourages over-consumption of foods high in added sugar and fat. It can also set a precedent for emotional eating, prompting Florida kids to eat when they’re not really hungry.

According to a recent study in The Journal of the American Medical Association, over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool age children and tripled for children aged 6-11 years. In short, about 20 percent of children are obese. Our children here in Tampa, Bradenton, and Osprey are no exception.

As a child health advocate based in North Port, I encourage all Florida parents to use non-food alternatives when rewarding good behavior.

I reward my kids with a trip to the Tampa library or more outside play time. Food is used to fuel our bodies, not to reward us for doing things we should be doing anyway.

When my kids have had an active day at their favorite Tampa park we refuel with nuts and blueberries, which are loaded with antioxidants. Another favorite snack we like to eat to recharge is made from the cacao plant and is also packed with antioxidants.

For more information about this delicious Sarasota kid-friendly snack and other children’s favorites, please contact me today. Thanks for visiting my North Port children’s nutrition blog.

The Lethal Machine In Your Osprey Garage

Tampa Kids Vitamins

As Sarasota kids get older, they often are able to help out around the house. Giving kids more responsibility is essential to their health and development, but parents should be sure to know what responsibilities their children are ready for, especially when it comes to working in the yard.

Mowing the lawn is  a weekly chore for many Sarasota families, and most parents are happy to turn this job over to an older child. However, parents should be absolutely sure that their child is old enough (and mature enough) to safely operate the machinery. After all, we’re talking about sharp, motorized blades whirring within arm’s length of our child’s legs and feet. Because these machines are commonplace, many parents forget how dangerous they are. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children be at least twelve years of age before using a walk-behind mower and sixteen for ride-on mowers. Of course, this doesn’t mean that every teen is capable of safely mowing the lawn, these are only general guidelines.

Anyone operating a mower should wear sturdy shoes instead of sandals. Remove objects from the lawn such as toys and small rocks before mowing, and insist that your child wear eye protection while they mow.

Regardless of who is cutting the grass at your Tampa, Bradenton, or North Port home, young children should not be outside playing while the mower is running.

3 Tips For Improving North Port Kids’ Attention Spans

Tampa immunization schedule

Hello Florida parents! Today in the North Port Children’s Health Blog, we are going to look at various ways to lengthen kids’ attention spans. An increased attention span can improve learning ability as well as behavior and is an important aspect of kids health in Tampa.

1. Find an activity that will hold their attention. This might mean that you need to experiment with different types of toys and crafts. One child might enjoy building blocks while another may become engrossed in an art project. There are many craft and hobby stores in the Osprey, Bradenton, and Tampa area where parents can get great ideas.

2. Recorded stories are a wonderful resource for increasing attention spans. Have your child lie on the floor and close their eyes, then play a recorded story. When it’s finished, have your child retell the story to you. Local Sarasota libraries are perfect for finding recorded books and stories. Or you can download audio books for your iPad or other electronic reader.

3. Make sure that your child is using age-appropriate toys, crafts, and media. Age recommendations can be very helpful when deciding what activities will effectively engage your child.

Remember that it’s natural for different children to have varying attention spans, but the attention span of all kids should improve with age.

I’m Rita Wright and I am passionate about helping Florida parents raise healthy and happy kids. I try to keep apprised on the latest in proper nutrition, childhood obesity, and immunizations. I am the owner of my own North Port home business that promotes High Protein Meal Replacement. Keeping Bradenton Kids Regular

Nutrition for Sarasota children

It might be an awkward subject for North Port parents to bring up with an older child, but making sure your son or daughter is having regular bowel movements is essential for their health – at all ages. If your child is experiencing problems with this, try these natural fixes before you resort to a medication.

Increased water intake is often all it takes for Sarasota area kids to overcome this problem since dehydration is a common cause.

To encourage your child to drink more water, try getting them their own water bottle and keeping it full in the fridge. That way, even if your child is too small to reach the tap themselves, they always have easy access to cold water.

It’s important to evaluate the diet of your child and look for opportunities to introduce more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods contain the fiber that is necessary for bowel health. Plus, you’ll see lots of additional health benefits from these steps toward proper nutrition.

If natural remedies don’t alleviate the problem, consult with your Tampa, Bradenton, or Osprey pediatrician.

My name is Rita Wright and I want to help North Port families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity in Osprey concern me. I also own a fantastic Sarasota area home business that sells High Protein Meal Replacement and Xobiotic.

Please contact me today at (941) 429-1043 if you would like to know more about High Protein Meal Replacement. I hope to talk to you soon!

Is My Florida Baby Ready For Solids?

Is My Florida Baby Ready For Solids?

Although Tampa pediatricians generally recommend starting infants on solid foods when they are around six months of age, there are important developmental milestones that must be reached before your baby can take this step.

Even if an infant’s digestive system is ready for solid food, the baby must be able to safely swallow it. A baby should be able to sit with assistance but hold his or head up on their own. Without head and neck control, eating solids is difficult and dangerous. Many Tampa pediatricians also advise parents to wait until an infant shows interest in what other family members are eating.

If you are unsure if your infant is ready for solid food, check with your Tampa pediatrician. Remember that for the first year your baby’s nutrition will still come primarily from breast milk or formula.

My name is Rita Wright. I am an advocate for children’s health and nutrition in Tampa. I also sell Xobiotic, a nutritional powerhouse. For more information on Xobiotic, call me today at (941) 429-1043.
